WARHFN Notes and Messages for 17 February

From Skip Sharpe W9REL
Wisconsin RACES Chief Radio Officer

Good Morning All,
Please find below the messages and net notes from this morning’s WARHFN. Please distribute this information to the groups in your area of operations.
ECs: You are the key in last-mile delivery of this information. Please send to all members of your groups.

* SIMCOM2019: It’s hard with snow falling outside again to think of spring as creeping up on us. None the less, May, and SIMCOM2019, is only about ten weeks away and we have work to do to prepare. SEC Kyle Shaffer and I were at a planning meeting this past week. WEM staff again reminded us that WI ARES/RACES has two major tasks to perform.

– One is to demonstrate sending messages via Winlink. To that end, if you don’t already have Winlink Express, also known as RMS Express, installed and running, please install get the software, it’s free, and practice with it. There is a WI ARES/RACES Digital Net each Tuesday which is a good practice opportunity. I will release a training bulletin on Winlink in the very near future.

– The other task we’ll have is to demonstrate statewide HF capability using Near Vertical Incident Skywave or NVIS. There are some simple antenna designs that take advantage of NVIS. Again, please practice with NVIS. I’ll release a NVIS training bulletin in the next few weeks.

* We held an IS-100c class here in the SE District yesterday. This is the second of four classes we’re doing. Each class takes about four hours to complete. Next month, it’s IS-800 “Introduction to the National Response Framework”. Classes are held at the New Berlin City Hall. If you’d like to attend, and I encourage you to do so, get in touch with SE District EC Art Davidson

* Finally, wile our AUXCOMM classes seem to be on terminal hold, Michigan is conducting and AUXCOMM class in Marquette April 6 and 7 and they have most graciously offered us a few seats. If you’d like to take the AUXCOMM class and you can get to Marquette, MI, please let me know this week so I can get the information to the class coordinator.

POSITION & TITLE: WI RACES Chief Radio Officer

Denny’s message as noted by me: You’re deployed, know who your supervisor is, know your task task. If you’re at a shelter or other locatioon, organize your workspace. Be familiar with the equipment. Know how to use it. If there’s a computer terminal know how to use it. Keep messages in order. Learn the names and positions of co-workers. Log activities, contacts, and other informaton. When in doubt, write it out. By the way ICS-214 is helpful you can also use plain paper and penciel. Write legibly. Know where supplies are. Speak clearly, but not too loud to avoid disturbing others. Use headphones. Know where facilities are (ed note: especially the coffee and the bathroom). Ask yourself ‘what if’ and plan for contingencies. Pace yourself and don’t speak too faster than others can write.
